You can earn an associate degree in Radiologic Technology, also known as x-ray or radiography, or an advanced medical imaging skills certificate in Computed. Strong math and science aptitude, adaptability and flexibility to many situations, ability to work with individuals of various ages, cultural backgrounds and degrees of illness, empathetic and compassionate with good interpersonal skills, ability to work in a team environment as well as independently, good analytical and critical thinking skills, and good technological computer skills. The program is fully accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology. Strong basic math and reading background, high school human anatomy, physiology, health occupation classes and physics.

Graduates of accredited programs are eligible to apply to take the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists national examination for certification and registration as medical radiographers. Students must be CPR certified while enrolled in the program. Credits earned in the associate degree program at Jefferson State may be applied toward a bachelor’s degree or higher at many participating Universities.Course work includes clinical rotations to area health care facilities, radiographic exposure, image processing, radiographic procedures, physics, pathology, patient care and management, radiation protection, quality assurance, anatomy and physiology and radiobiology. Once registered as a radiographer, individuals are eligible for employment in hospitals, emergency clinics, doctor’s offices or other health care facilities. The program currently has Clinical Affiliate partnership with many Radiography Departments in the Greater Birmingham Area Most clinical rotations are from 7 am-3 pm. Upon admission into the program, students are involved in clinical activities at area hospitals to gain further “hands on” knowledge. The radiology application contains the information regarding specific dates for the application deadline. The program begins in the Fall semester each year with the application period in the Summer semester. Graduates are eligible to take the national certification exam offered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists. The program is accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology. Upon successful completion of the 75 credit-hour program, students are awarded an Associate in Applied Science degree.

All lecture and laboratory courses are offered on the Shelby Hoover Campus. The on-campus laboratory offers students the opportunity to learn radiographic imaging utilizing digital and mobile radiography. The five-semester program includes comprehensive coursework and clinical education beginning in the first semester. Radiologic Technology is the art and science of producing diagnostic medical images using ionizing radiation (x-ray) in diagnosis and treatment by physicians.
